Phalaris, or canary grass

Canary grass (Phalaris canariensis) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Poaceae family. It originates from the Mediterranean region. Currently, it can also be found in other parts of the world. It is perfect for filling bouquets of dried flowers. It also looks beautiful on its own, placed in a slender vase.

What does phalaris look like?

Phalaris grows up to 100 cm in height. The plant consists of vegetative and generative shoots. The former produce broad leaves with pointed tips. They are usually grey-green or light green in colour. They form characteristic clumps, giving the plant a spreading habit. Generative shoots, on the other hand, are more widely used, ending in bulky, rough, egg-shaped inflorescences. When the plant matures, grains form inside the spikelets, which are used in the production of food for ornamental birds – parrots, canaries, zebra finches and others. Picked at the beginning of flowering, the generative shoots of the Canary Island spurge are ideal for drying.

Canary grass in its natural habitat and in cultivation

Canary grass is a popular plant in Southern European countries. It is most commonly found on soils of moderate fertility and average permeability. It prefers warm and sunny locations that are also sheltered from the wind. In natural conditions, it is a ruderal plant. Phalaris usually inhabits dry meadows and forest edges. It is also found on roadsides. In Europe, it is mainly known as an ornamental grass. It looks great in eco-style garden beds. After cutting, it is also used as a vase grass.

Where is canary grass used?

Although canary grass is a plant known primarily to ornamental bird breeders, it is also valued by florists. Its main advantage is that it is easy to grow. Phalaris does not have excessive care requirements. It is resistant to drought and pest infestation. Gardeners also appreciate it because it does not form troublesome runners and is not an invasive plant. Dried canary grass is perfect as a decorative grass. It is an interesting alternative to the popular lagurus. Its delicate spikes beautifully complement dried flower arrangements, adding lightness and delicacy. Canary grass also looks beautiful in various types of decorations and wreaths.
