For many years, flowers have remained the most beautiful and versatile gift for birthdays. They can be given to anyone – regardless of how closely related you are, how well you know the recipient, or their age. They are suitable for both women and men. Is it appropriate to give dried flowers as a gift for a name day or birthday?

Until recently, cut flowers were the only acceptable gift for a name day or birthday. Alternatively, you could give a potted plant - provided that the recipient and the giver were close. Today, however, dried flowers are gaining popularity, and as it turns out, they make a wonderful gift for a birthday or name day.

Why are dried flowers a great gift idea?

Firstly, because of their beautiful appearance. The dried flowers available today bear no resemblance to the dull, greyish plants that used to be found in almost every home decades ago. Professional drying methods allow them to retain their natural colours. There is also a choice of dried flowers dyed in vibrant shades. Rounding off the range are preserved plants, or so-called ‘eternal flowers’, which retain the appearance and texture of fresh ones but, unlike them, require no watering or any other maintenance.

Which dried flowers would make a good gift for a birthday or name day?

The advantages of dried flowers mean they are ideal as a gift for a name day or birthday. Both single-variety and mixed bouquets work wonderfully in this context. Which flowers are best suited? Almost any. The choice should, however, be based on the individual preferences of the recipient. And although the rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t give yellow or purple flowers for birthdays or name days, you can actually make an exception if the birthday boy or girl happens to like those colours.

It is also worth bearing in mind that it is not advisable to choose prickly dried plants for birthdays or name days. We are, of course, referring to thistles and echinops, but only in single-species arrangements. Arrangements comprising different species, which may include wild teasel, are perfectly acceptable. We suggest that you can make them yourself or opt for ready-made bouquets of dried flowers, created by professional florists.

A gift for a plant lover - creative ideas

Aside from bouquets, other arrangements make excellent birthday or name-day gifts for plant lovers. Flower boxes are an interesting idea; they have been all the rage in the world of gift trends for several months now. They are simply flowers arranged in a box, serving as a ‘ready-made product’ to decorate your home or office. Dried flower arrangements under a glass dome are also very practical and elegant. They can be created using traditional dried flowers or preserved plants – for example, the subtle and incredibly charming hydrangea.

There’s nothing to stop you from making your own gift from dried flowers. A wreath could be an excellent idea, which the recipient can hang on the wall or in a window. Pictures made from pressed flowers are elegant and original, whether set in classic frames with a background or in transparent ‘floating frames’. We suggest that dried flowers could also inspire you to find creative ways to wrap your gift.

Birthday decorations made from dried flowers

Dried plants make a fantastic gift. They can also be a wonderful decoration for a birthday party. They are particularly well suited as table decorations. A large bouquet can be placed in a vase in the centre of the table. Tiny bouquets will look lovely in small bottles. The advantage of these is that they do not get in the way of people sitting opposite each other. Dried twigs also look beautiful placed alongside the place settings.

It’s worth noting that the variety of dried plants allows you to tailor the decorations to the style of the event. In recent years, themed birthday and name-day parties have become all the rage. A celebration in a boho or glamour style, or one inspired by famous films, requires appropriate decorations. Dried plants are perfect for this, scoring top marks. They can serve as both a central theme and an addition to other decorations.
