Sorghum

Sorghum is an annual plant belonging to the Poaceae family. It originates from Africa, although one endemic species growing in Mexico has been identified. Sorghum is very resistant to drought and high sunlight exposure, which is why it is found primarily in warm and hot climates, where it is one of the most important grain crops and a staple food for the population. Outside Africa, sorghum is cultivated in India and China. In Europe, this plant is primarily valued for its decorative qualities. It works well in gardens and flower beds. The impressive sorghum ears are also used in floristry. Dried sorghum is an excellent addition to fresh and dry bouquets. It will appeal to lovers of handicrafts.

What does sorghum look like?

Sorghum is a grass that can grow up to several metres in height. It has thick, upright shoots, topped with a characteristic panicle consisting of a large number of hard grains, somewhat resembling a corn cob. The abundant fruit produced by the plant gives it a decorative appearance. The plant also has long, broad leaves covered with wax to prevent water loss. Interestingly, sorghum also has a well-developed root system that can reach up to 1.5 metres into the ground.

Sorghum cultivation

Historical research shows that sorghum was already known 5,000 years before our era. Today, it is one of the most popular grains in the world. It occurs primarily as a cultivated species. In Africa, it is a staple food for humans. The plant's advantage is its resistance to drought and strong sunlight. Sorghum does not require special soil conditions. It grows even on nutrient-poor soil.

In Europe, including Poland, sorghum is known primarily as an ornamental plant. It is becoming increasingly common in home gardens and allotments. It prefers warm and sunny locations – preferably those that heat up quickly. It grows well in light, well-drained soils. It likes sandy soil and also thrives on stony ground. However, it does not tolerate heavy soils with waterlogging. Its growth is not affected by soil pH – the soil can be either acidic or alkaline. It is worth noting that sorghum tolerates drought well. Lack of water does not cause the plant to die, but rather to go dormant. As the species originates from warm parts of the world, it is not resistant to low temperatures.

The use of sorghum

In Africa, sorghum is grown primarily for its grain, which is then processed into groats or flour. It can also be used to produce an alcoholic beverage similar to beer or vodka. The stiff stalks of the plant are also ideal for making brooms or brushes. They can be used as fuel and even as building material. Outside Africa, sorghum is mainly grown for animal feed.

However, the climate characteristic of Poland does not allow the grains to reach full maturity. For this reason, sorghum is primarily valued in our country for its aesthetic qualities. It is perfect for gardens where grasses play the main role. It can also be an excellent backdrop for other, shorter plants. It works well as an element dividing the garden into zones, separating the decorative part from the recreational part.

Cut sorghum stalks look wonderful in a vase. To increase their durability, they can be dried. Dried sorghum will look great in flower arrangements. There is nothing to stop you from adding them to bouquets where dried grasses play the leading role. Individual sorghum stalks also work well on their own. They are very versatile - they look great in both modern and classic arrangements. All the more so because they are available in many colour variations.

Dried sorghum will also be appreciated by craft enthusiasts. By dividing the panicle into small pieces, you can obtain material for making wreaths or greeting cards. Sorghum is suitable for embedding in resin and for creating 3D images. It also works well in potpourri.
