Switchgrass – plant characteristics

Switchgrass (Panicum) is a plant with an extremely long history. It is one of the oldest cereals known to mankind, cultivated for thousands of years on various continents. Its small, nutritious seeds, known to us as millet groats, have been a source of food for entire generations. However, switchgrass also has another, equally beautiful side. It is a plant of great decorative beauty.

It belongs to the Poaceae family, which means it is simply a grass. Perhaps its strength lies in this simplicity. The form of switchgrass is the essence of an idyllic landscape. It is associated with warm, ripe summer, golden fields and carefree days. This modest grass has great decorative power, which we are rediscovering today by introducing it into our homes.

What does switchgrass look like?

The beauty of switchgrass lies primarily in its inflorescences. The plant produces fairly tall, slender but strong stalks. At their tops, like a crown, dense, elaborate panicles develop. They are full of tiny, shiny grains. Densely packed, they create an impression of fluffiness and abundance. They look like cascades of tiny, natural pearls.

Depending on the variety, the panicles can be more compact, straight and upright. Others, on the other hand, are looser, more scattered and gently droop under their own weight. This fluid, graceful form gives the plant a wonderful lightness. They are smooth to the touch and, when moved, make a quiet, very pleasant and soothing rustling sound.

The natural colours of switchgrass are a whole palette of warm, earthy tones. They are most commonly found in shades of straw gold, sandy beige, and sometimes delicate green. We can safely say that every single blade with a panicle is a small work of art created by nature.

Switchgrass cultivation

Switchgrass is a thermophilic plant. It thrives and grows best in full sun. It does not have high soil requirements. Its resistance and vitality are truly fascinating. It is cultivated in many parts of the world – in Asia, Africa, but also in Europe, including Poland. Switchgrass fields are a truly wonderful sight. They sway in the wind, creating a golden, rustling sea.

When switchgrass is grown for decorative purposes, the harvesting process is different from that used for groats. It is cut at the right moment. The idea is that the panicles should be fully formed and have a beautiful colour, but still hold on tightly to their precious grains.

The twigs are then dried. This is usually done naturally, in airy, shaded areas. It is thanks to careful drying that switchgrass retains its shape, colour and structure for a very long time. It also becomes a durable decoration.

Not just groats – the uses of millet

The first association with millet is, of course, cooking. Millet groats, obtained from its hulled seeds, are valued for their nutritional properties. It is a healthy and very nutritious grain. Millet is also an important ingredient in animal feed, especially for birds. Parakeets and canaries love its small, nutritious seeds.

However, for centuries, people have also recognised its decorative qualities. In Polish tradition, millet, along with other cereals, was part of traditional harvest wreaths. It symbolised fertility, abundance and gratitude for the harvest. It was also used to create folk decorations. Today, in an era of returning to nature, it is experiencing a real renaissance in a completely new, floristic role.

Dried switchgrass in floristry

Dried switchgrass is a real rarity for florists and decorators. It is a very rewarding material for creating compositions. It brings extraordinary lightness, naturalness and volume to them. Its delicate, often overhanging panicles add movement and finesse to bouquets. They look as if they have frozen in a delicate dance, moved by the summer breeze.

Switchgrass is the perfect backdrop for other, more distinctive dried flowers. It provides a wonderful backdrop for them. It goes well with fluffy pampas grass, soft lagurus or linen twigs. It can also play a leading role. A bunch of switchgrass placed on its own in a simple clay or glass vase is an excellent, minimalist decoration.

It fits perfectly into boho, rustic, Scandinavian or Japandi interiors. It brings a lot of warmth, cosiness and an idyllic atmosphere to them. Dried switchgrass is also a great material for making wreaths and garlands. Its dense panicles create a stunning fluffy base. It is also used in wedding decorations, especially those with a natural, casual character. Traditionally, it is also an element of Easter palms.

Dried switchgrass at Blosmi

Switchgrass occupies a very special place at Blosmi. It is a grass that perfectly matches our love for natural beauty and durable decorations. Bunches are available in a variety of stunning shades. Switchgrass in colours such as light blue or pink is sure to attract attention. The dyeing process is carried out with great care. It gives the panicles a new look without damaging their delicate, natural structure.

Classic switchgrass brings a breath of freshness, lightness and elegance to interiors. Colourful switchgrass, on the other hand, can add energy to the whole composition and become its colourful accent.

Each bunch is prepared with due care. Long stems allow for free creation. They can be shortened as desired or used whole in tall vases and compositions. It is a material that stimulates the imagination. It allows you to compose your own unique decorations.
